Atlantic Coast Line, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Lake Superior & Ishpeming,
Louisville & Nashville, Northern Pacific
Pennsylvania Railroad
The History of the GE U25C
Introduced in 1963, the GE U25C was a six-axle diesel locomotive developed following the success of the four-axle U25B. Powered by a 2,500-horsepower FDL-16 engine, it was part of GE’s “Universal” series, popularly known as the “U-boats.”
Only 113 units were built, serving railroads such as Burlington, Northern Pacific, Louisville & Nashville, and Pennsylvania Railroad.
In 1965, Pennsylvania Railroad received 20 units, many of which later operated under Penn Central and Conrail.
Despite its limited production, the U25C left a distinctive legacy through its diverse railroad liveries and operational history.
